J.K. Simmons stars as Assistant Police Chief Will Pope, whose career is about to experience a seismic shift, in the hit drama The Closer.
Simmons has appeared in diverse projects spanning motion pictures, television and stage performances on and off Broadway. He played J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. His motion picture credits include Hidalgo, with Viggo Mortensen; The Ladykillers, with Tom Hanks; The Mexican, with Brad Pitt; For Love of the Game, with Kevin Costner; The Gift; Off the Map; First Snow; Thank You for Smoking; The Astronaut Farmer, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee and Rendition, with Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal. Other recent appearances include the films The Vicious Kind, New in Town with Renee Zellweger, I Love You, Man with Paul Rudd, the Coen brothers' Burn After Reading and, memorably, as offbeat father Mac McGuff in the Academy AwardŽ-nominated hit comedy Juno.
Simmons' latest films include The Music Never Stopped; Jennifer's Body; Extract; The Vicious Kind; I Love You, Man; Beginner's Guide to Endings; and the Academy AwardŽ-nominated film Up in the Air. Additionally, he recently finished shooting Contraband, which will be released in 2012.
In addition to feature films, Simmons he played Vern Schillinger in Tom Fontana's Oz for six seasons on HBO, and had a long-term recurring role on Law & Order as Dr. Emil Skoda. Additionally, he has had several guest-starring roles on award-winning series such as Arrested Development, Nip/Tuck, ER and Spin City. He also lends his voice to animated series, including Generator Rex, American Dad and the upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man, in which he will reprise his role as J. Jonah Jameson.
Before achieving success in acting, Simmons studied to become a composer at the University of Montana.
